Fort de France hotels - always the right choice
Favored by businesspeople without unlimited expense accounts, Hôtel L'Impératrice, a stucco-sided, five-story hotel faces a landscaped mall in the heart of town, near the water's edge. L'Impératrice was originally built in the 1950s and named in honor of one of Martinique's most famous exports, Joséphine. Its balconies overlook the traffic at the western edge of the sprawling promenade known as La Savane. The small- to medium-size guest rooms are modern and functional. The front rooms tend to be noisy, but they do offer a look into life along La Savane. Bathrooms are compact, with a combination tub/shower. Don't expect outstanding service. Almost no one speaks English, and many of the members of the staff seem a bit jaded. But despite the confusion in the very noisy lobby, and the unremarkable decor of the simple bedrooms, you might end up enjoying this hotel's unpretentiousness. The hotel's restaurant, Le Joséphine, does a brisk business with local shoppers in town for the day. Facilities include restaurant; bar; laundry service; dry cleaning; rooms for those w/limited mobility. After 10pm, you'll enter Le Lafayette, a modest downtown hotel through its entrance on the rue Victor-Hugo; during daylight hours, you'll use a larger entrance that opens onto the rue de la Liberté, and climb a short flight of terra-cotta steps to reach the simple lobby. Don't expect grandeur; this hotel's snob appeal is practically nonexistent. The hotel was renovated in 2002, and its bedrooms are tidy and clean. Most units contain comfortable twin beds, with small, pure-white, shower-only bathrooms. The overall impression is neat but simple and unpretentious. The inn is the oldest continuously operating hotel on Martinique, originally built in the 1940s with quasi-Art Deco hints that are now slightly dowdy. There's a small restaurant on-site and several eateries are within a short walk. Facilities include restaurant; bar; laundry service; dry cleaning.
